After sending in your application, the scholarship board often requests to meet with shortlisted applicants in order to determine whether they truly deserve the scholarship. As the competition is very tough, it is crucial to be well prepared so that you can convince them during that brief interview duration that you are the best candidate for the scholarship.
Goal, Passion and Contribution
Nothing impresses an educator more than meeting students who are hard working, who know what they want in life and are passionate about contributing to society through their expertise and skills. It is imperative to find out about courses offered by the college and how your academic major can help you achieve your ambition and dreams.
Justify Your Cause
The scholarship board is extremely interested to know whether an applicant is seriously committed to the course and whether he or she really needs the financial assistance. You should be prepared to explain your level of commitment especially related to your financial and social circumstances. Being open about your personal beliefs can also be perceived as a sign of sincerity on your part.
Dress for the Occasion
Despite the saying ‘don’t judge the book by its cover’, good impression and appearance are absolutely critical during scholarship interviews. Sloppy T-shirts, nose rings or mini-skirts may not sit well with scholarship board members who are trying to determine whether a candidate is seriously committed to the course and truly deserve the scholarship.
Be Punctual
Arriving at least half an hour before the scheduled time of the interview gives you time to settle down and focus your mind on the interview ahead. Besides, being late for an important interview is likely to be interpreted as a lack of responsibility on your part.
Rehearse the Night Before
On the night before the interview, spend some time rehearsing the answers to potential questions interviewers may ask and ensure that you have a good night’s sleep. Remember to pack additional copies of your resumes, letters of recommendations and other documents that are required for the interview on the night before so that you do not risk forgetting them in the rush of the morning.
